About this journey
Mt. Nanda Ghunti (6,309 m) , often referred to as the “Veil of Goddess Nanda Devi,” is a prominent peak in the Garhwal Himalayas , located within the Nanda Devi National Park. Trekkers and mountaineers often catch stunning glimpses of this majestic summit from the famous Roopkund trail , alongside the striking trident-shaped Trishul massif . Although the climb is not highly technical, the peak is known for its unpredictable weather and challenging crevasses , making it a serious undertaking for experienced climbers.
The expedition to Mt. Nanda Ghunti begins from the well-known Roopkund trek route and branches off towards Homkund , which serves as the base camp. From here, climbers follow the eastern ridge , navigating glaciers and moraine fields en route to the summit. The journey rewards adventurers with panoramic views of iconic peaks such as Trishul, Chaukhamba massif, Kamet, Nanda Devi, and Dronagiri, creating a breathtaking high-altitude experience.
This expedition is designed for experienced trekkers and aspiring mountaineers with a strong fitness level and prior knowledge of high-altitude climbing techniques, including roping, jumars, and crampon use . The best window for attempting Nanda Ghunti is between June and September to early October , when weather conditions are relatively favorable. It offers a perfect combination of adventure, Himalayan beauty, and the thrill of high-altitude mountaineering.

01Day 1: Dehradun → Sutol Village
Distance: 250 km | Duration: 8–9 hours drive Meet at Dehradun by 6:30–7:00 AM and drive to Sutol. On arrival, settle into your homestay. The day includes:

02Day 2: Rest Day in Sutol
Distance: 0 km | Duration: 0 hours A rest day to acclimatize to the altitude, complete paperwork, and prepare equipment for the expedition. Overnight: Homestay
03Day 3: Sutol (7,875 ft) → Lata Khopri (9,679 ft)
Distance: 8 km | Duration: 5–6 hours trek Trek through forested trails with gentle ascents and descents. Pitch tents at Lata Khopri and enjoy the alpine setting. Overnight: Tents / Campsite
04Day 4: Lata Khopri → Homkund Base Camp (13,450 ft)
Distance: 8 km | Duration: 5–6 hours trek Trek through dense forest leading to alpine meadows, followed by a steep 2 km ascent to Base Camp. Homkund glacial lake provides a stunning backdrop. Overnight: Tents / Base Camp
05Day 5: Acclimatization at Base Camp
Rest and acclimatize. Prepare physically and mentally for higher-altitude camps. Overnight: Tents / Base Camp
06Day 6: Base Camp → Advanced Base Camp (15,092 ft) → Base Camp
Distance: 4–5 hours round trip Carry loads to Advanced Base Camp (ABC) and descend back to Base Camp. This rotation helps with high-altitude adaptation. Overnight: Tents / Base Camp
07Day 7 to Day 18: Expedition Days
08Day 19: Reserve Day
09Day 20: Reserve Day
10Day 21: Sutol → Dehradun
Drive back to Dehradun. Farewell to the team and conclusion of the expedition. Overnight: Travel / End of Expedition
